Why do single sex schools even exist?

I think it's kind of weird that these schools believe that students in a single-sex classroom do better. (Ex. girls do better when alone in Math class) I think people should be surrounded by various people of all types, otherwise how will that child react when thrown into the real world? He or she wouldn't be able to function or take a test if there was a member of the opposite sex in the room!

So why does these types of schools even exist? Shouldn't a good school promote social skills as well as learning skills? They tend to go hand in hand in the real world...

You're supposed to be able to concentrate better without the temptation of the opposite sex.

For parents all girl schools were also a good threat for keeping their daughters in line.

All boy schools were supposed to actually have better education. Sort of like college for someone under 18.

It's sort of how when you get to college some dorms are all girls or all boys. I've heard girls say they feel safer this way, but if you live in the real world in an apartment building there are going to be guys living next to you... I can understand separate sex floors, but it's not as if you're even sharing a bathroom. So you wear a towel to go take your shower, so what, you wear less on the beach.... >_>
